This car is built like shit, feels like it is going to fail, and is spastic in anything that isn’t dry. It’s a blast to drive, but the charm is quickly wearing off.
The traction control freaks out sending the car into different direction, and today the car jumped out of first while crossing a busy road. The other day I found moisture building on the inside, from what seems like a failed seal. The usb connection now seems loose, because it makes static noises on bumps.
I plan on dropping it off at the dealer with my list of complaints after Christmas, but the charm is nearly gone. On top of the weak sheet metal, terrible paint, and other quality issues, I wouldn’t recommend this car to anyone. Too bad I’m stuck with it for a while.
A place that I hate, along with a car I’m beginning to feel the same for.

A while ago when you started posting that your FiST made you appreciate the Slowrunner more, I kept a watchful eye. It was reminiscent (I can’t spell) of when I started driving my pickup more and more and driving the Celica less.

I read the comments on the “The RS is the cheapest M car you can buy” post, and a lot of FoST owners chimed in. “Yeah it was a great car -- I traded it for something else after a year though and bought a Mustang/WRX/Tacoma/Paseo.” I’m thinking, shit, how great could it have been?

Don’t look at me, I drive a Tercel.
I assume it’s a crossover of a lot of things: 1) quality control issues, 2) honeymoon wears off, 3) new shiny car (ie the new Mustang) comes along and you can’t resist, and/or 4) that fiasco with many owners getting pretty awful fuel economy.

For the $19,600 I paid for it, total drive off the lot cost (not including trade) it was a great bargain. I’d say for a $20k budget, it’s hard to beat for a fun, functional hatchback. My problem was that I broke my self proclaimed rule when I bought the Focus: Always have a truck and a car. It can be in whatever order, project truck, reliable car, reliable truck, project car. When I bought the Focus, I traded in my ‘12 Tundra. I had a project Miata. My brain couldn’t handle the two cars that served a rather similar purpose. Now that I’m back in truck and car ownership world, I vow to not leave it again.

Oddly enough, I was talking the local leader for SCR’s autocross series. He’s wanting to offload his FiST next year as well.
That said, pop’s ‘08 Mustang GT with less than 60k miles (can’t remember, it’s been a few days since riding in it) might be on the market next year for 12k$.

Pretty bad. The hood started flaking the first week I had it. But the paint isn’t what’s so bad, it’s how susceptible to denting it is. It has major hail damage...FROM...acorns. The near weightless nut.

Last year we had a few FoST owners on oppo complain they were getting 19mpgs, or something awful, and that’s while staying off boost. Anecdotes for sure, but it’s hard to stomach fuel economy like that on a FWD 4-banger. There was also the complaint against Ferd that the Ecoboost vehicles did not get the fuel economy that was advertised.
We have several oppo member that are former FoST/FiST owners. Think about that — these models are only a few years old!

All modern car paint, aside from some luxury car paint with multiple layers of clear, is absolute flaming garbage. It’s from some combination of environmental regulations and cost cutting. It’s nearly impossible to avoid chips from road debris.

Ford really needs to get their shit together in the quality control department. Our Fusion is the first car my parents have ever repeatedly had to send back to the dealer for interior trim adjustment. And I can still see down into the dash at the base of the A-pillars thanks to the gigantic gap that’s there, among other things that I’d expect out of my brothers Grand Am or my S10, not a modern car.

I actually average better than EPA ratings in my FiST, it’s just kind of really shoddily built. And there are better cars for not much more money. Also Ford has an awesome first time buyer program, so often it’s the only choice for young enthusiasts with low credit, but want a fun new car. After the new wears off and the credit builds, there are just better cars available, as long as you don’t need 4 doors. That said, I still would rather have my FiST over an 86.

Sad to hear but I can’t say I’m surprised. My brief test drive in one did not give me a sense of solid construction or build quality. The materials felt cheaper than they should have.
As a weekend toy it’s a great idea. I am sure I would not like the ownership experience long term as a DD.
I am very pleased with my GTI purchase. After nearly one year I have never felt like I bought to wrong car. There are things I am going to change/improve as it is not perfect. But it works very well as a DD when all I want to do is get home without a fuss.

If I could go back? As I told E90M3, I wouldn’t have bought anything. I would have just fixed the 4Runner and bought a Miata/E30/944 a few months later.

The problem with most bros that buy them is that they fall into at least one of these categories:
A) Too young, indecisive, and/or have no attention span.
B) Have never driven a manual car before, so this is their first (and probably last) one. Burning a clutch out by 10k miles is pretty common.
C) Bought the first couple years, so they suffered early adopter problems.
D) Will wreck it in no more than 2 years because it’s actually more powerful than they can handle.
E) Can’t leave it alone, constantly modifying it until it breaks.
E) Bought it exclusively on the praise showered on them by online car reviewers.
F) Made a down payment with their military signing bonus, then realized they couldn’t really afford the payments.
Probably cruel, but belonging to multiple groups, I have seen these so many times that they don’t even surprise me anymore.

They don’t get awful fuel economy by my standards, but it’s definitely not an economy car. You need self control to get reasonable gas mileage, which is in very short supply among the average bros that buy them. They will easily beat the EPA estimates if you stay out of the boost.

There’s no way to get 19mpg driving unless it was broken, modified, or you’re perpetually idling in stop-and-go traffic.
Oddly enough, it really hates idling for a four-banger, with possibly the worst idling fuel consumption I’ve ever seen in a car. It make cars with V8s I’ve owned look downright fuel efficient.
Even when I drive like a complete maniac for an entire tank, I still see at least 24-25mpg.

*Disclaimer: Chevy guy. But you know that.*
Oddly, though I know from experience that the Fiesta is a piece of shit...
It’s one of three Ford vehicles I’d have. The other two would be the Raptor and a Fusion 2.0 EgoBoost AWD.
I drove a base model auto for a bit, and the conclusions was: It’s tinny, gutless, the transmission is shit, it feels like it’s made of tinfoil, it’s ugly, the interior is garbage, but stick it a corner and it was absolute magic. The ST fixes the lack of power, fits a manual trans that I can make do what I want, looks much better, and will still have that magical chassis setup (but slightly better in fact), and I could live with the rest. I mean, I live with a first gen Colorado. I’d be the first guy to tell you that the interior quality is, at best, crap. And I don’t care.
It’s an interesting situation, and I think it can be summed up in one question: Would you care if you never drove it again? For my truck, I’d miss the small size, the looks, the determined feel and of course the engine. I most definitely would miss it. The Fiesta... I definitely miss the handling, but as a whole, no. I don’t care if I never drive one again. The ST might be a different story. The Fusion wouldn’t bother me, which makes me think that if I had one I’d end up in the same situation as you are now. Our family vehicle is a 2011 Sienna. I hate it. I actively avoid driving it. It replaced a 2002 Montana, which I do actually miss. Also an ‘88 Chevy Beauville van... which I miss a ton. My sister has a ‘10 Golf. I used to love driving it, now I’m happy to leave it to someone else.
...you know maybe I just like shit

My BRZ has a dent in the roof from a falling acorn. In the car’s defense, I did hit it at speed driving through a neighborhood. Not sure if that exacerbated the impact.
But I feel you on the garbage paint - Subaru’s is complete crap. Mine was full of defects right off the lot. I took it to a dealer and they actually resprayed about half the damn car. Apparently the new paint is garbage too - I take immaculate care of this thing and the paint has many coats of polish, but if a damn bird poops on it and I don’t know to get it off within maybe 30 minutes (you know, sitting in my office at work for 8+ hours daily), it’ll etch the paint. It’s fucking ridiculous.

If I knew the answer I’d tell you. Great FWD performance car for the money, but the market is oversaturated with similarly priced awesome and even better cars perhaps? Or maybe they realized the potential the motor has is not only limited by cylinders an displacement, but also by being FWD? Or maybe it’s just one of those cars that’s got a fun shelf life before you try a different cereal brand.
Who knows...I’ll tell you I enjoyed the hell outa mine, I just wanted RWD, and a Mustang more so.

I prefer old non-water based paint that hurts the environment to modern Ford paint, and new paint in general. My 32 year old 944 had as many or less paint chips as my ST did by the time I’d traded it in. :p
But my Mustang’s paint is holding up pretty good so far. Much better, in fact. But I know it could get worse from now on. :p

Almost a year ago, January of this year.
Nothing special edition, but did make the dealer swap the cloth S seats into my SE that would have black leather. Also have the performance package.

All of that makes sense, maybe people just out grow them as well, in terms of wanting more.

There’s a lot of hype out there, so I couldn’t say whether it lives up to all of it, but it’s definitely what reviewers described - a practical car that is fun to drive. It has excellent handling for what it is (they did a great job balancing the car so it doesn’t even feel FWD, aside from very slight torque steer), is probably the most practical car I’ve ever owned, and it’s even pretty nice inside. You get a lot for the money. It’s certainly possible to trade off one or two on this list to get more of the other at the same price, but you can’t get a decent blend of all three in one car. I think a lot of people expect a lot more of one of these than there is, not a practical blend of all three.

GM water baised paint is the worse while Glasurit knows how to make a base coat cover well. Only weak point of german cars is the clear coat. Every w126 and e38 from Florida have a clear coat bald spot on the roof.

Glasurit is always good or above average from what I’ve seen. I don’t even want to see what GM paint is like after 20 years.

That’s a fair enough assessment.

I’ll paint you an imagine, its shit paint especially on white paint. The roof paint peels off and has either exposed metal or with primer.

Yeah a buddy of mine is in the same boat. I played with his 2015. After a few weeks the new car thing wore off. Its an ok car to drive. To me its under powered. Plus it could really use a diff.
My buddy who has the car finally put a pin in why its not special. Mainly it does not make you feel special. His girl friend has a regular fiesta and he says its 95% of the fun. Right now he would sell it for the loan payoff. About the only good thing is he averages 34mpg out of with the best at 41mpg. However it could leave today and he would not care.
After driving his I would have came back from the test drive and said no thank you. Better options out there. Maybe not brand new ones but still newer stuff I would buy instead.

Eh, my feelings have changed again. I discovered the source of my shift issues. Something I installed. That and I learned how it is supposed to be driven. It has to be driven like you are pissed off for everything to make since. It’s more fun than anything else I tested, including the two pony cars worth having, so for now, it stays.

Yeah being around autox enough and knowing people I get the keys to loads of stuff. Right now one of the 2015 mustangs are a lot of fun. Granted its double of a firsta st. I think he paid 35k with the track pack. But if I was shopping in that 20k budget I think a wrx would be nice. Granted I don’t think I could live with the owners.
However I will not be buying a car with payments again. From now on its all cash buys. I have been looking into Base C5 Corvettes. As a daily I would love it. After driving some at some Autox events I’ll keep the miata. But who know I think my new plan is to get my first car running again. I do miss having the ability of a v8. And if I get the one running it should be making 430+wrhp.
